Chapter 6
Sticking with the theme of how things worked with Jamie, Hawke was lost in his thoughts, daydreaming about the way Jamie’s body fit deliciously around his cock, and minding his own business when he heard his name fall from Jamie’s lips. Snapping to attention, Hawke’s brain disconnected from reality as he watched Jamie lean closer to the microphone. Fuck. His spot in the darkened corner at Drumchapel Amphitheater, did nothing to save him in his moment of need.
“My manager is going to kill me as soon as I step off stage, but this is important. See, you haven’t met Hawke. That’s my husband, by the way.” Damn. The explosion of noise inside the building made Hawke think his head was going to explode. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him.” The crowd went eerily silent, hanging on Jamie’s every word. He held something up that Hawke couldn’t see. “Hawke gave this to me three years ago, August seventh. It’s an Exile guitar pick.” Three years ago, August seventh. Hawke knew that date had sounded familiar when Jamie spoke of his tattoo. The crowd went wild at the popular grunge band’s name. Jamie waited until they quieted down before speaking again. “You see, Hawke has believed in me longer than anyone. Since he’s here with me tonight and this is the last place Exile performed before a plane crash stole their voices from the world, I wanted to do this here.” He looked down at the pick in his hand. “On the day Hawke gave this to me, he made me promise I would use it. That night, I wrote this song. This is the first time I’ve performed it live.”
The reaction from the audience made Hawke wonder if the roof would collapse from the noise. Even if it came down, Hawke didn’t know if he could move. His breaths came in short gasps. The way his eyes burned said much about how he was barely blinking. The first musical note fell from Jamie’s guitar and silence rang through the building as if the crowd held a collective breath. They could’ve disappeared and Hawke wouldn’t have noticed. Jamie turned his head as he sang the first note. His eyes glittered beneath the lights as he found Hawke with his gaze. Love filled Hawke’s heart until he thought it would burst.
“I almost hate that you see me
No one else is aware.
If you ever look away
There’ll be no one else to care.
I almost want to run away
But I’m just not that strong.
If you ever turn to me
I’ll never let you be wrong.
Every time I’m near you
I wonder why you can’t see.
The only thing I really need
Is for there to be a you and me.
I hope one day you’ll notice
I hope one day you’ll see.
Every song I’ve written
Has not been for me.
Without you I would’ve lost it
A long, long time ago.
I want to do the same for you
Bring you in from the cold.
Every time I’m near you
I wonder why you can’t see.
